IT Training and Career Guidance
The Maa Trust equips young people in the Maasai Mara with the digital skills and career support they need to succeed. At the Talek Youth Friendly Centre, over 100 students gained computer literacy and internationally recognized ICDL certification, while career guidance programs reached 7,500 students and 700 teachers across local schools. A flagship career fair connected nearly 750 youth with 11 higher education institutions, opening doors to new possibilities. By bridging the digital divide, these programs are shaping a confident, employable generation ready to lead their communities into the future.
Expanding Opportunities Through IT Training
The Maa Trust is committed to equipping young people in the Maasai Mara with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in today’s fast-changing world. Through IT training and career guidance initiatives, we are breaking barriers to higher education, expanding employability, and fostering aspirations that link personal growth with community transformation.
In 2024, the IT Hub at the Youth Friendly Centre in Talek experienced remarkable growth in enrollment and course completion. A total of 103 youth graduated, including 57 students in the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) program and 46 students in basic computer packages. This represented a significant increase compared to 2023, driven by rising awareness and positive feedback from graduates.
To further improve accessibility, the Hub introduced flexible online ICDL courses, enabling employed professionals and Maa Trust tertiary scholarship beneficiaries to gain critical digital skills. By bridging the digital divide, the IT Hub is ensuring that young Maasai men and women are equipped with tools that expand their career options and strengthen employability in both local and global markets.
Guiding Students Toward Brighter Futures
Complementing digital literacy, The Maa Trust’s career guidance program reached more than 7,500 students and 700 teachers across 15 secondary schools in 2024. Expert-led workshops helped students understand higher education opportunities, familiarize themselves with Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) procedures, and prepare for exams. Sessions also addressed holistic growth by guiding students on how to align passion with career choices, balance academics with social life, and guard against sexual exploitation in schools. For younger students, sessions focused on subject cluster selection, helping them make informed academic decisions early in their schooling.
A highlight of the year was the career fair held in Sekenani, which attracted 748 participants, including 485 secondary school graduates and 263 continuing students. The event featured 11 higher learning institutions, including three universities and eight technical and vocational training colleges, giving youth direct access to information on admissions, scholarships, and career pathways. This fair provided a rare platform for young people in the Mara to interact with institutions and broaden their horizons for future success.
Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
Together, the IT Hub and career guidance initiatives are empowering youth with both the hard and soft skills needed to succeed in education and employment. By creating opportunities that combine digital literacy, academic support, and mentorship, The Maa Trust is preparing a generation of confident leaders capable of shaping a sustainable future for their communities and beyond.
