WASH Infrastructure

The Maa Trust’s WASH infrastructure projects are transforming access to clean water, sanitation, and health across the Mara. At Kirok, a 400,000-liter rainwater harvesting system funded by Aqua Nirvana Foundation now provides safe, reliable water to 197 households, easing the burden on women and girls and reducing waterborne disease. In schools, new sanitation blocks like those at Nterere Primary are improving health, dignity, and attendance for students. By pairing infrastructure with training and community ownership, these projects are breaking cycles of vulnerability and building healthier, more resilient futures.

Safe Water for Communities

The Kirok Community Rainwater Harvesting Project, funded by the Aqua Nirvana Foundation, has brought a life-changing shift in access to safe water for 197 households. A 400,000-liter storage tank supported by 1,200 square meters of roofing captures and stores rainwater, while a prepaid water kiosk, filtration unit, and sanitation facilities ensure equitable and reliable provision. For families that once relied on contaminated sources, this system means cleaner water, better health, and reduced time spent fetching it — particularly for women and girls. Over 350 community members joined county and sub-county WASH partners at the launch, reinforcing local ownership and sustainability.

Improving Sanitation in Schools

Infrastructure upgrades also extended into education. At Nterere Primary School, new sanitation blocks were built for 146 students and 10 staff members, offering safe, dignified facilities that reduce illness and absenteeism. Proper sanitation is particularly vital for girls, helping them remain in school and learn without interruption. The project, funded by Max von Cossel and the Nterere community, demonstrates how collective action can strengthen schools as safe and supportive learning environments.

Sustainability Through Partnership

Every water and sanitation project is paired with awareness and training to ensure long-term impact. In 2024, partners like the Saruni Basecamp Foundation and Aqua Nirvana supported education on hygiene and water management, aligning infrastructure with knowledge. Kirok joins six other WASH projects already serving thousands across the Mara, with more set to launch in 2025 in Olkarkar and Ilaleta. Together, these initiatives are not just about infrastructure but about dignity, resilience, and equity — providing the building blocks for stronger, healthier communities.
