On February 12th and 13th, The Maa Trust, with support from Aqua Nirvana Foundation, hosted its 5th Annual Career Fair at Sekenani Comprehensive School in the Maasai Mara. The annual event convened institutions of higher learning, including universities, TVET institutions and colleges to showcase academic programmes, technical training opportunities, and education financing solutions for youth and students within the Maasai Mara ecosystem.

In total, the fair featured participation from 5 universities, 14 TVET institutions and colleges, KUCCPS, and one bank. The event engaged hundreds of Form Four graduates, alongside more than 1,000 students drawn from 12 high schools across the Mara ecosystem, providing them with direct access to information, guidance, and institutional representatives to support informed education and career decisions.
True to this year's theme, “Empowering Maasai Youth: Pathways to Growth and Opportunity,” the Career Fair gave students direct access to information on admissions, scholarships, financial support, and diverse career pathways. The event aimed to equip young people with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their academic and professional futures.
“As the Education Manager at The Maa Trust, I view the Career Fair as more than just an event; it is a transformative platform that connects classroom learning to real-world opportunity. For many of our learners in the Maasai Mara ecosystem, this is the first time they engage directly with universities, TVET institutions, and financial partners, ask critical questions, and begin to envision themselves in diverse professional spaces. It is through such exposure that we begin to address skills mismatches, broaden career aspirations, and guide students toward informed and purposeful pathways."

Bridging the Career Information Gap
Launched in 2022, the Career Fair has grown into more than just an annual event; it represents a sustained commitment by The Maa Trust to nurture and empower the next generation of leaders within the Mara ecosystem.

While access to education in the Maasai Mara has improved in recent years, significant skills and information gaps persist, limiting young people’s ability to compete effectively in an increasingly dynamic and competitive job market. Access to reliable career information and structured guidance remains particularly limited in rural areas. National research indicates that up to 90% of schoolchildren in Kenya lack adequate career guidance, often resulting in poor subject choices, misaligned career pathways, and long-term dissatisfaction.
Throughout the year, The Maa Trust's Education Department actively engages 18 high schools across the Maasai Mara ecosystem through structured, termly career guidance sessions. These engagements are designed to equip learners with knowledge on diverse career pathways, subject selection requirements, emerging opportunities, and the competencies required to thrive in today’s evolving labour market.
The Career Fair thus serves as a critical bridge between classroom learning and labour market realities, exposing learners to institutions of higher learning, technical training providers, and industry professionals. Participating institutions expressed strong appreciation for the platform, noting the value of engaging directly with students from the Maasai Mara, sharing programme information, clarifying entry requirements, and fostering early connections that support informed decision-making.

“We wish to thank The Maa Trust for partnering with us and giving us a chance to showcase our programmes to students and interact with other schools,”
-Justus Kapenn, Instructor at Wildlife Tourism College (WTC), partner of The Maa Trust
Eric Moturi from Vera Beauty College noted,
“The Career Fair has been a good experience. We have interacted with many schools and met new students to tell them more about the courses we offer.”
Dennis Ngare, Marketing Officer from Presbyterian University of East Africa, added,
“The Career Fair has been successful. We have had a high number of walk-ins from schools. The environment is welcoming, and the coordination has been excellent.”

For students, the Career Fair provided clarity and inspiration. Jamin Maina, a Form Four student from Moi Naikarra Secondary School, shared,
“The Career Fair has been quite helpful. It has helped me expand my horizons on opportunities I didn’t know were possible as I would like to pursue a career in law.”
Sointa Taki, a final-year student from Siana Girls Secondary School, said,
“I got to understand the process of applying for courses. I am interested in pursuing Medicine, Journalism, or Education.”
Mary Ndung'u added,
"This year’s Fair was particularly encouraging. The level of institutional participation, student engagement, and the depth of conversations demonstrated a growing awareness of the importance of structured career guidance. We remain committed to strengthening this platform to ensure that young people in the Mara are not only educated, but empowered, market-ready, and future-focused.”
Advancing Education and Opportunity
The Maa Trust’s education programmes continue to empower youth across the Maasai Mara ecosystem with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive and evolving economy. With the support of its partners, the organization remains steadfast in strengthening career guidance systems, addressing persistent skills mismatches, and improving learners’ transition pathways to higher education, technical training, entrepreneurship, and meaningful employment.
Through initiatives such as the Career Fair, The Maa Trust contributes meaningfully to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all, while fostering a generation of well-prepared, adaptable, and purpose-driven young leaders in the Maasai Mara.
