From Scholarship Recipient to Junior Accountant: Giving Back to the Community That Believed in Him

Growing up in Narok County, Albert Kalelian knew that education was never guaranteed. As one of seven children in a Maasai family, financial hardship was part of everyday life. Providing school fees, learning materials and basic necessities for such a large household was a constant struggle. Yet, those challenges became the foundation of a dream that would one day come full circle.

"Supporting a large family on limited financial resources was challenging, and there were times when ensuring we all remained in school was difficult. Those experiences shaped my perspective on the importance of education, leadership and community service," he says.

Determined to create a different future, he remained committed to his studies despite the uncertainty of whether he would be able to pursue higher education. The cost of university tuition and learning materials seemed beyond reach, and opportunities for mentorship and career guidance were limited.

Everything changed when he was awarded a scholarship through The Maa Trust.

"Receiving the scholarship was a turning point in my life. It relieved the financial burden that could have prevented me from completing my studies and gave me the confidence to focus on my academic and professional goals," he recalls.

The scholarship provided much more than financial support. Through mentorship, leadership training and professional exposure, he gained the confidence and skills needed to pursue his ambitions.

Inspired by his passion for accountability and responsible resource management, he enrolled to study Accounting. His goal was clear: to use financial knowledge to promote transparency and contribute to sustainable development.

"I have always been interested in understanding how organizations manage resources, make financial decisions and create sustainable growth. I believe accounting is one of the strongest tools for promoting accountability and transparency."

Today, he is living that dream as a Junior Accountant at The Maa Trust, the very organization that invested in his education.

In his role, he supports financial operations by processing transactions, maintaining accurate financial records, tracking budgets and ensuring compliance with financial procedures. Every day, his work helps strengthen programme that improve the lives of communities across the Maasai Mara.

"Working at The Maa Trust is meaningful because I get to support programme that positively impact communities while applying the knowledge and skills I gained through my education."

One of his proudest achievements was completing his undergraduate degree despite the obstacles he faced.

"Successfully completing my undergraduate studies despite the challenges, I encountered reinforced my belief that education has the power to transform lives."

His journey has also been shaped by leadership. Through the African Youth Leadership Forum (AYLF), he has developed skills in communication, teamwork, strategic thinking and servant leadership, skills that continue to influence both his career and community work.

His passion for empowering young people led him to become a Career Guidance Mentor with The Maa Trust, where he has mentored thousands of students, helping them make informed decisions about their education and future careers.

"Guiding young people, inspiring them to dream bigger and seeing them pursue their goals has been one of the most fulfilling leadership experiences in my journey."

Beyond mentorship, he is helping shape the future through the Mara Skills Academy, which is initiative, which aims to equip young people with practical technical skills that improve employability, encourage entrepreneurship and strengthen livelihoods.

For him, giving back is not simply a choice it is a responsibility.

"The Maa Trust invested in my education and personal growth, and I believe it is important to give back by supporting the same mission that transformed my life."

Looking ahead, he dreams of building self-reliant communities where young people have access to education, practical skills and meaningful economic opportunities.

"I want to empower youth with practical skills that lead to employment, entrepreneurship and improved livelihoods. My goal is to create a sustainable impact that benefits individuals, families and future generations."

When asked what success means today, his answer reflects how far he has come.

"Success, to me, is not only about personal achievements but also about creating opportunities and positive change for others. It is about using my knowledge, skills and experiences to make a meaningful contribution to society."

He remains deeply grateful to the donors and supporters who made his journey possible.

"Your support has done more than pay my school fees. It has transformed my life, expanded my opportunities and empowered me to contribute positively to society. Thank you for believing in students like me and for creating pathways to a brighter future."

His message to other young people is one of hope and determination.

"Believe in yourself, work hard and never allow your circumstances to define your future. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn, seek mentorship and remain committed to your goals. Challenges will come, but persistence, discipline, faith and a willingness to keep learning can open doors that once seemed impossible to reach."

His journey is a testament to the lasting impact of investing in education.
